When The Music Man opened in 1957 it swept New York off its feet, winning eight Tony Awards. It received the Best Musical Award that year beating out West Side Story. The Music Man won the first Grammy Award ever presented for a Broadway Musical and subsequently an Oscar for best film score. All this came from one man who wrote the book, the score and the libretto—something virtually unheard of today. Prior to that, Meredith Wilson’s claim to fame was the theme song for The Maxwell House Time Radio Show and the holiday classic, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” —from James Wilson’s program notes
Mike McCoy played Mayor Shin brilliantly in this production directed by our beloved Mr. Wilson, no relation to Meredith (that we know of). It was a lush and beautiful production and the cast and crew were brilliant. The costumes were particularly amazing and so was the pit orchestra. We will not soon forget the experience.
