The Bothell High School Theater Arts 7th Annual Dramafest finished beautifully by presenting Mike McCoy with the Best Actor Award for his performance in Jonathon Rand’s play, “Law & Order: A Fairy Tale Unit” directed by Katelyn Barrows.

Evidently fairy tales and nursery rhymes need their own criminal justice system to protect and serve the characters who inhabit this world. Mike played a fairy tale policeman opposite Jessica Atkinson (nominated for Best Actress). I am being completely unbiased when I say Mike was brilliant. He made us laugh and cry with an unending stream of great lines and a heartfelt monologue drenched with emotion.

The rest of the cast was charming and loveable through each of the scenes that culminated in a highly intense courtroom cross-examination. Andrew Chamberlin, who played a fairy tale lawyer in the district attoney’s office, received the Best Supporting Actor Award.

Bothell High Alumni and last year’s Best Actor recipient, Nick Baldwin announced and presented Mike with his award. Some of you may remember that in last year’s Dramafest, Mike actually punched Nick in the face during a scene, surprising them both. I still have to edit that play, Broken But Not Torn. and burn it to Bluray so we can all enjoy seeing Mike’s surprise when his fist actually connects with Nick’s face. Maybe I’ll put that clip up on YouTube.

The audience was full of celebrities for many of Mike’s performances. Grandmother Colleen drove all the way from Medford, Oregon to see Mike. Aunt Kathy drove from Port Orchard. Newlyweds Carolyn and Matthew Monson cut their honeymoon short to be there. Plus all the western Washington McCoys except Kelly were there—Claude, Jackie, Karen, Nate, Laurie, Kyri and of course, Kali. Good friends Wendy and Randy (The King of Ping) also attended.

Congratulations Mike! You competed against some very talented artists who turned in amazing performances, like Kevin Lin (also nominated for Best Actor) in Booby Trap, but your Mom and I believe you totally deserved the award. We are very proud of you.

    Michael,

The performance even translates well onto a Blu-ray disc on a big screen TV (which we debuted last night). I was still laughing with tears in my eyes (as Nathan). You can hear Kathy’s and Grandma’s chuckles throughout the performance. Well done! I will forever remember to “respect the wall”!

    Love ya,
    Mom

    Mike –

I laughed, I cried (well, I actually didn’t cry, but I laughed enough to have tears in my eyes). You gave an incredible performance. Funny throughout. The audience was constantly laughing. The courtroom monologue was gripping and great. I can’t wait to see what you do next!

Good job, Mike! You made me laugh and then, feel soooo sorry for poor Detective H.D. all in a short time. It was fun to see you in this play, and I am very proud of your performance.
